Edinburgh bookshop crowned Independent Bookseller of the Year in Scotland

An Edinburgh bookstore has been crowned Independent Bookstore of the Year in Scotland, securing the title for the fourth time.

The Edinburgh bookshop, located on Bruntsfield Place, also won the 2014 Children’s Bookseller of the Year trophy and is celebrating success again after its latest award.

The British Book Awards this morning (Wednesday) revealed the regional and national winners of the 2022 Independent Bookseller of the Year award.

Sponsored by Gardners and supported by the Booksellers Association, organizers say the regional awards celebrate nine inspiring bookstores, selected from a shortlist of 63 finalists, who have continued to support their local communities in these turbulent times with their insider knowledge, their inclusiveness, their digital innovations, adapted events and, of course, books.

Tom Tivnan, Editor of The Bookseller, said: “It was without a doubt the most competitive year we have ever had for Independent Bookseller of the Year, and these nine stores should be justly proud of have claimed their regional and national crowns while their Indian colleagues have also been thriving.

“While there are different models here, from long-established family-owned stores to a community-run nonprofit, the common thread is constant innovation and unwavering support for local communities.

“It may be counter-intuitive to say, but we may be in the golden age of the independent bookstore. The past 10 or 15 years have been the toughest for freelancers, as they battled online competition, steep supermarket discounts, rising retail prices and, of course, recently, a global pandemic.

“But they have risen to the challenges; independents are booming and the number of stores is growing.

“Maybe it’s because they combine the old with the new: this almost unique insider knowledge and deep love of books that they can pass on to readers, as well as a digital savvy as freelancers use everything from crowdfunding to TikTok to reaching customers and improving their businesses.”

The Edinburgh bookshop is now in the running for the overall award for Independent Bookstore of the Year, announced at the British Book Awards winners’ ceremony, to be held at Grosvenor House in London on Monday 23rd May 2022.

The overall winner of Independent Bookstore of the Year will also compete to be crowned Bookseller of the Year.
